What a beautiful day to be out looking at homes, especially one in a gated lake community. Stop by my open house on 201 Country Club Drive in Cross Junction, VA in Lake Holiday Estates. Just tell the guard that you want to see the model home. The model home is the Allegheny with three bedrooms, three full baths. Wooded views with acess to beach, boat ramps, boat slips, basketball courts, tennis courts, tot lot, and community center. I’ll be here until 4-p.m.

Grand Illumination

More Holiday fun for the Van Laeken family. Last night we went to see the annual light show at Clearbrook Park just north of Winchester in Frederick County. Every year the park lights up for the month of December. Illuminating the walking path around the park with Christmas scenes. It’s usually my moms tradition to take my two boys out to the park every year, Anna and I would spend the time Christmas shopping, but this year I decided to see what this light thing was all about. We had a good time, we had fresh snow, hot chocolate and lots of beautiful lights. Not a bad way to spend some time with the family.

Winchester’s First Snow of the Season

Today we are having our first snow of the season and it’s a good one. The ground is still warm so we’re not getting much accumulation but it’s been snowing heavy most of the day. My Kiwanis wreath stand was cancelled today but I still went out with my wife to ring the bell for the Salvation Army. Every year the Kiwanis club volunteers to ring the bell for the kettle drives. We take hour shifts, and it always puts me in the holiday spirit. My wife Anna braved the snow with me to take some pics. Very Snowy!

Winchester First Friday’s

I just got back from selling Christmas Wreaths for my Kiwanis Club. We set up a stand on the old mall to take advantage of the “First Friday” crowd. Winchester’s First Friday is held, you guessed it, the first Friday of every month. The Old Town Winchester Development Board describe it as “an evening of drawings, paintings, prints, sculpture, ceramics, photography and other visual art”, where “locals and visitors are invited to stroll the historic streets at their leisure, visit galleries, meet local artists, view new works and exhibits, and listen to live music.”

I always enjoy spending time with my fellow Kiwanians but our wreath selling skills need improvement. Unfortunately we only sold two wreaths, we’ll be back out tomorrow so come by and see us.

Old Town Christmas Parade

For the last 50 or so years downtown Winchester has held an annual Christmas parade.

Last years parade was cancelled, I’m not sure why but the public sure was upset. After much outcry the annual parade returned this year on it’s new day. My oldest son Andrew plays in the Daniel Morgan Middle School band and was marching in the parade, so we decided to check it out. Believe it or not it was the first time that I’ve actually made it downtown for the parade, even though I’m in walking distance. It was cold and windy last night, probably not the best night for my first Christmas parade. The parade starts around 6:30 -p.m. – yes in the dark. A parade at night is what you might expect. Cold and dark. I dressed warm but I should have worn some fuzzy gloves because I was freezing for most of the time. It’s very cute. Little kids dress up in holiday costumes, local bands march and play Christmas songs, Santa is the big star and they light the downtown tree at the end of the parade. If you plan on giving it a chance next year just remember to dress warm and bring some hot cocoa. Great for the kids and a nice way to kick off the Holiday season.
